Annabel Tilley

Annabel Tilley makes drawings derived from national newspaper photographs of places where horrible things have happened and nothing is quite as it seems. She is interested in the deadpan nature of these photographs, and how, when they are divorced from their dramatic headline and translated into drawings, they give little clue as to the horrors hidden behind their walls.

For instance: the ordinary-looking Victorian terraced house in Gloucester where Fred and Rosemary West, killed their victims in the 1990’s and buried them in the cellar; the Italian Cottage in Perugia where British student, Meredith Kercher was found with her throat cut in 2007; the Austrian townhouse in Amstetten were Josef Fritzl incarcerated his daughter, Elisabeth for 24 years from 1984-2008, and the luxury villa in Antigua where the British newly-weds, Catherine and Benjamin Mullany were shot dead on their honeymoon in July 2008.
